Hi,
If you have a domain which is registered through WordPress.com, you can use that domain with a self-hosted platform. To do that, you will need to point the domain (which is registered through WordPress.com) to the hosting platform (e.g. Hostgator).
There are several methods to point the domain to the new host: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/
Method 1. You can leave your domain registered with WordPress.com and point it to another host by changing its name servers: https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-name-servers
Method 2. Some hosting providers require further DNS changes to point a domain to their servers. They may provide A and CNAME records you need to add to your WordPress.com domain. Here is how to do that: http://support.wordpress.com/domains/setting-custom-a-records/
Method 3. Or you can transfer the domain from WordPress.com to another provider (you may even use Hostgator as a domain registrar and hosting provider). Here is how to transfer a domain: https://en.support.wordpress.com/transfer-domain-registration/
And here is a guide to move a blog from WordPress.com to a self-hosted platform (in case if you need it): https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/
Hope these help.
Best of luck.

Hi,
I’m trying to use the method 2 to point my wordpress domain to my host (123 reg), as this requires an A record, but I can’t follow those steps as I can`t edit my domain. How can I change it?

Hi,
I hope you will be able to edit the A record by following the instruction provided by WordPress.com. It says:
You can manage your domain from My Domains, by clicking the Edit button next to it and then Edit DNS. You’ll see the DNS records for your domain.
Your domain’s A record points to WordPress.com by default. It is the first record in the list under Existing DNS Records. Hover over it and click on the pencil icon to edit it.
Your new host should have provided you with the address to point your domain to. It consists of four sets of numbers separated by periods, e.g: 66.155.11.238
Enter the address in the points to field, click on Add and then on Save Changes.
The domain will start pointing to your new host immediately, but most hosts require you to set up the domain on their end as well.

Does it help?

If you find the above process complex/not working, you may try to get Staff’s help by adding “modlook” in this post’s tags on the sidebar.

Thanks for the answer, that is what i was trying but my problem is that i don’t have any “Edit” button next to my domain, so I can’t do all the process.

The edit button should be there. Are you logged in as the owner of the site? I mean do you have the full admin privileges?

I only have “Primary”, the name of the domain and a Status column that states “Never expires”

The ability to configure A Records is only applicable to custom domain names – what is the custom domain name you need help with?

Hi, I think you are trying to change A record of a WordPress.com domain. I think you can do it for only the domains you bought from here, not the free ones.
