How to find original page name

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I’m having difficulty locating a page. I see on the web it’s called …/chat-now but this page name does not exist in the files? When I hover over the link to edit in wp it says http://site.today/wp-admin/post.php?post=10&action=edit. But again this doesn’t seem to correspond to a specific page.
I’ve tried search using specific word contents of the webpage but it doesn’t help to locate the actual page so I can edit it.

Does anyone know what I mean and can anyone let me know how to find the original page to edit?

    Thanks,
    John

    Hi John,

Are you referring to a WordPress.com site? If so, then what is its address (URL)? Identifying the site helps us to determine if you’ve started a thread in the proper forum, and to see what you’re referring to.

Presuming that you’re referring to a WordPress.com site,

Does anyone know what I mean and can anyone let me know how to find the original page to edit?

If you’ve found the page that you’re referring to on the web, then click on the page title to visit the page, and then click on the edit button to go to the page editor. The present title will appear in the title field. The original title will be reflected in the slug, unless you’ve edited the slug at some point. See also the Edit Pages Screen support page.

What is a slug? See the Slugs support page. The first section says:

The slug is the portion of the URL that refers to that specific page. Generally speaking, slugs tend to be very similar to the original title.

So you’ll see the slug when you look at the page URL, as an extension of the site URL.

I see on the web it’s called …/chat-now but this page name does not exist in the files?

The “chat-now” part is the slug. Unless you’ve changed the slug at some point, then the original page title might have been “Chat now,” or “chat now,” or perhaps “Chat-Now.” Capitalization and hyphenation in the original title wouldn’t be reflected in the slug.

The first section of the support page also says:

When you give a Post, Page, Category, or Tag a title, WordPress will generate a slug automatically.

So unless you’ve changed the slug, then the slug will correspond more or less to the page title, as I’ve mentioned above.

See also the Identifying Slugs section of the support page, which describes how to view and edit a slug in a post or page editor.

    Hi Doc,

Thank you for your ideas. I don’t think that’s it. The page I’m looking for is http://iSeller.Today/chat-now. The slug says the same name so that’s not it. What I’m looking for is the original page so I can look at it in the file system. The file chat-now is not found anywhere in the files I downloaded or have seen through my server. This is the first time I’m working with wp.

Thanks for any other ideas on what the page name could be.

    Regards,
    John

    John,

As I indicated above, the information and instructions I provided pertain to a WordPress.com site. Your site isn’t hosted by WordPress.com, so the provided information and instructions aren’t relevant.

Though I was able to visit the site (http://iseller.today/chat-now/), I was unable to identify that domain at the sites Whois.Net and ICANN WHOIS. However, the site WhoIsHostingThis? indicates that it is not hosted by WordPress.com.

This support forum is primarily for issues regarding WordPress.com accounts and websites, and not for issues regarding self-hosted sites such as yours. WordPress.com and WordPress.org are different versions of WordPress, with different support forums. See the WordPress.com and WordPress.org support page.
