How to fix a messed up menu tree

  • Unknown's avatar

Somehow my menu tree got messed up and now I have no idea of how to fix it. The pages are properly displayed in the center column, but only two are displayed in the header and some are missing from the menu tree. I have no idea how this happened, or how to fix it. I guess it doesn’t matter since readers can scan the middle column, but it just looks weird.

    Hey there!

I see that about 2-weeks ago, a large number (approximately 150) of navigation menu items were deleted. Did this coincide with your menu acting strangely?

Let me know and it’ll help me track down your problem. If you made any other adjustments at all to pages (ie. re-naming, or making pages “sub” or “child” pages, etc) please do let me know.

    Many thanks!

From time to time over the years I would move a particular menu to the top of the tree. In trying to do this, I may have done something to screw things up. It’s very difficult to move these menus around on this theme, as it involves endless scrolling and all kinds of workarounds, but I’ve done it before without destroying anything. Now I see that many titles of pages are missing from the menu tree, although the pages are still properly named and in the correct order in the middle column.

That’s all I did. I didn’t create any new menu items. I only tried to move an entire branch to another place on the tree.

    Hello again!

I do see your that the settings in your menu (as laid out in your site’s Dashboard) and your site’s main navigation are working in agreement. The site’s menu is behaving just as I see it is set up.

I do see you are having layout issues with the second menu item, “Renaissance and Reformation,” because all your nested menus don’t fit within the majority of browser sizes. However, they are on the page.

Additionally, the menu structure is set up very differently than the center column menu. Did you want to stay withe center column layout, or are you now moving in a different direction?

If you’re in the midst of re-forming your menu, let me know and I keep my hands off your work. When you’re done, if you still need assistance, I can advise.

    Cheers.

I want the structure to remain as it is in the center column. I believe it got messed up when I tried to replace the BACKGROUND section with the OXFORD section, something I’ve done before with sections without trouble (although it is agonizingly difficult to pull these sections around with the way it’s set up under MENUS). This time well over half the pages that were once listed in the top menu under their parents are now gone from the MENU list, and I have no idea how to put it all back so that there are choices for readers in the header Menu. The way it is now I’d just as soon have nothing at all in the header Menu, so that readers can just scroll down the center column. The way it is now makes no sense at all. Thanks for your help.

    Hello there,

I added one of the missing menu items “Shakespeare the story-teller” into the menu under the header listed in the center column. I experienced no error or problem in adding this menu item. When I saved it, it went live on your site as a child menu item to the parent, “SHAKESPEARE WHO?”

If you are having problems dragging and dropping, you should begin from scratch as the menu tree is (as you know) completely jumbled. If you do this, you can avoid dragging and dropping and simply add the items in order you want them to appear.

I suggest creating the first menu item, adding the sub menu items, and saving. Then, you can make sure them menu item works well on your site. Then, move on from there to the second menu item. You may find this easier than trying to juggle the task of dragging and dropping and reordering the entire menu in its current state.

You can also use the linked controls within each menu item’s settings box, rather than dragging and dropping:

If you’d prefer to reorder the menu via drag and drop, you may wish to try it in another browser, such as Firefox or Chrome. Some folks find alternate browsers more user friendly.

Once you have the first menu item/sub menus complete, if you’re having trouble still, let me know and I’ll take a look and see what the issue is.

Right now, there isn’t really a technical problem I can assist with as the menu seen on your site is behaving as it’s set up in your menu structure. It might not be what you want, but there’s no bug I can get my hands on to fix for you.

Thanks much and let me know how it works out.
