How to fix badly imported media files from a self-hosted install?
-
We imported http://hoydenabouttown.com/ to http://hoydenabouttown.wordpress.com/
While many of the attachments were imported and their URLs re-written to point at
https://hoydenabouttown.files.wordpress.com/ URLs in the posts that use them, very many also weren’t.For example, see the first image in the body of https://hoydenabouttown.wordpress.com/2015/02/02/leeanne-enoch-to-be-first-indigenous-woman-in-queensland-parliament/, which links to
https://i2.wp.com/hoydenabouttown.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/indigenous-candidates.jpgWhen we point http://hoydenabouttown.com/ at http://hoydenabouttown.wordpress.com/ , will images like https://i2.wp.com/hoydenabouttown.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/indigenous-candidates.jpg still work? Can this import failure be fixed so that these are https://hoydenabouttown.files.wordpress.com/ URLs?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Having now pointed http://hoydenabouttown.com/ at http://hoydenabouttown.wordpress.com/ , I know the answer: all such links to hoydenabouttown.com/wp-content/uploads/ images are now broken.
This will be exceptionally time consuming to fix by hand, especially since the whole point of the importer was to do it for me (and it did work in some cases). Is there a way to fix this without editing hundreds of posts by hand?
-
Yes, the staff can reset your importer and you can do it again. I will flag this for their attention.
-
I’d really rather avoiding doing the import again: people have been making new entries and comments on the site, and I don’t see why it would be any more likely to work the second time. Is there an alternative?

@galois: that’s a weirdly hostile response. @Puzzlement isn’t being ‘impatient’ by asking the staff to check with her before resetting the import. There is no reason to snap at her.
-
@leeflower
Galois was not rude and did not snap at anyone. In fact, puzzlement does have to wait patiently for Staff to respond to her here in this thread, and there are many other threads that were tagged for Staff assistance prior to this one being tagged.@ puzzlement
Staff read all threads prior to responding so they will read what you posted above. This thread is tagged for Staff and they have a backlog. What’s required is your patience as Staff work through all forum threads tagged for their attention and through all email support tickets in chronological order based on datestamps and timestamps – first posted first served, as would be expected.
How long it takes to clear the threads and support tickets depends on how many Happiness Engineers are working on them at any given point in time. It also depends on how complex the issues in each thread and ticket are are.
Please don’t bump your thread here by posting into it again because it’s not in your best interest to post to it after it has been tagged for Staff help. Doing that moves the timestamps forward and it takes longer to get a response.

Hi puzzlement,
Based on what you’ve said so far, it sounds like the problem is some of your images were attached to posts, and some weren’t. Since importer can only bring along images that are attached to posts, that would explain the “some worked, some didn’t” nature of this problem.
The images seem to be working in the example you provided in your initial post. Could you send me a link to one where you still have a problem? That will help me verify what’s going on and hopefully move us towards a fix that doesn’t involve you doing the whole thing by hand.
As for the rest, while patience is required, calling each other out on tone issues almost always ends badly. The best way to make sure we have a forum community that is welcoming to all is for each of us to do our best to be as kind as possible in every interaction. If you do see behavior that violates our Code of Conduct, please add a modlook tag so staff can address it. Thanks!

Thanks for replying. Does the importer do those fixes in batches? Because for 12 hours or so, that example post was still broken, and I agree it now seems fine.
There are still some broken posts for you to look at, for example http://hoydenabouttown.com/2013/02/07/february-whimsy-shenanigans-edition/ (first image, src link) and http://hoydenabouttown.com/2012/06/24/sunday-singalong-bjork/ (first image, before the text).

Thanks for the extra info.
There are a couple of different things that might be in play here. I’m going to pass this on to our developers to take a look.
Depending on where things broke down, we may need to do part of the import again. Is the content still available on the original site?
-
Thanks. I can make it available if needed, but not at the domain http://hoydenabouttown.com/ any more, since that now points at WordPress.com servers.
-
Gottcha. Hopefully, it won’t come to that. We are working on this now. I’ll let you know how it goes.
-
puzzlement,
We were able to fix all but about 12 of the images. I can give you a list of the images that will still need to be fixed by hand if that’s helpful. Let me know!
-
Thanks so much lizthefair! Fixing 12 images by hand should be more than fine.
The list would be very helpful: are you able to see my email address? Email would be the best way to send them if possible.
