How to fix broken images after 'changing blog address'?
-
Hey folks,
I have a hosted wordpress blog, and decided I wanted to change the subdomain I was on.
I did so, but all the images I have uploaded are now broken, as they, and the links around them, are still pointing to the old address. I can’t change BACK to the old address, because WordPress says it’s taken.
Will the “It’s taken” message disappear some time soon, allowing me to rename back? Is there an easy way to fix all the image urls, without going through blog by blog, image my image, link by link?
Did I ruin EVERYTHING?
Cheers,
Tom

The “it’s taken” message will never disappear. If you wish to go back to that site, go to MY BLOGS in your menu and you may see the site listed there unless you deleted it. Deleted site names are not released to the public after deletion.
When you imported the old site to the new site, if you selected the option to import images, they should have all been renamed to match the new site’s address.
You could go through the site page by page (a blog is a website and it consists of Pages and posts), changing them one by one in the TEXT editor of each post or Page (copy and paste over the old address fast and easy).
An alternative is to backup up the site (EXPORT an XML file) then delete all the content (on posts and Pages) and do another import, this time carefully selecting the import image option.
Another alternative is more complex. It also requires you to be fairly tech savvy, and that is to find the original exported file that you imported into this site (hopefully you still have it), or to export the data from this current site, and open the XML file with a really good text editor (not notepad). Do a search and replace of EXACTLY the old address with the new address, being VERY careful, then save the file and upload it to a cleaned out version of the new site. I really don’t recommend this, but it is an option if you are very technically inclined.
You didn’t ruin anything. You just missed a step in the import process.
