How to Fix the WordPress Updating Failed and Publishing Failed Errors?

  • Unknown's avatar

Has anyone else had a problem with editing and/or publishing errors?

This is the message that pops up when I click publish:
‘Publishing failed. Could not update the meta value of jetpack_seo_noindex in database.’

Any idea what would cause this? It says the same thing when editing but states ‘Updating failed’ instead.

I am not very knowledgeable about websites. I can navigate them well, I just don’t know how to even go about figuring out what’s causing this. I read the article on kinsta.com and I can’t make sense of it. I don’t pay for any plug-ins or anything for my blog. I haven’t changed any settings recently. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: No
    Correct account: Yes

Thanks for sharing this information! Do you notice any changes to your page after the error occurs? Are you adding footnotes?

We have been seeing some other reports of this same error message coming in over the past couple of days, though we’re still having a bit of difficulty isolating the issue. Any detailed information is really helpful in our efforts to identify the underlying cause.

Our developers are already aware of this issue, and they are actively looking into a fix, but I don’t yet have a timeline for when this will be resolved. I am passing along the steps you’ve shared to replicate the issue and letting the developers know about this error’s impact on you.

We’ll do our best to update you once we have any updates, though we’re not certain of any viable workarounds at the moment. If you find anything else out on your end, let us know and we’ll be sure to pass that information along to our development team as well!

In case it helps troubleshoot, I just want to say that I am having the exact same problem. I published the most recent blog post on January 17 with no problems, but I realized yesterday that I needed to change the access from “subscribers” to “everyone”, but I am prevented from doing so with the “jetpack_seo_noindex” updating error flag.

    The blog is: https://calhoungenealogy.wordpress.com

    Thanks!

Another thing I noticed about the particular post that is giving me the “update failed” error: it does not register any “recent views” on the Posts page. On the “Posts” page, this article is listed, and has associated likes and comments, but no “recent views”. Neither does it appear on the view tallies on the “Stats” page. This is unlike every other post I have uploaded in the past. FYI, the post in question is here (currently subscription only, since I can’t change it): https://calhoungenealogy.wordpress.com/2024/01/17/the-manor-of-corkagh-part-1-of-2/

Thanks for any help to this maddening problem!

I’m having the same problem this morning trying to edit and release this week’s blog post. “Publishing failed. Could not update the meta value of jetpack_seo_noindex in database.” The blog post is https://wordpress.com/post/aandjpeitreasures.wordpress.com/2854 https://aandjpeitreasures.wordpress.com/2024/01/26/time-of-year/

Same problem, I also use footnotes. My post was fine when I first published it last week, (password protected, so beta readers could check it out before I made it public) and I only encountered this issue once I tried to save revisions this morning.

I have also been having this issue on posts with footnotes. Seems to occur after scheduling or publishing them. I have a post right now that the footnote numbers are messed up and I can’t fix it because of this error.

  • Thank you everyone for reporting your experience with this issue. We are still gathering information and are working on a fix. As @staff-heroponriki mentioned, if we receive any updates, we’ll be sure to let you know.

    Thanks again.

I’m running into the same issue while trying to submit a post to be reviewed by my professor. I used one footnote and every time I’ve refreshed the editing page the written content in that footnote gets deleted.

It seems like footnotes definitely increase the probability of having this issue. However, they cannot be the sole explanation, because the post I’m having trouble with has no footnotes. (Or at least, none that I deliberately created.)

  • Hi everyone, thank you for your patience. We were told by the developers that this issue should be resolved. Please message back to confirm things are now working correctly on your end. Thank you!

The error has gone away, but I’m still finding that the footnotes are wonky. The numbers look right in the editor and I’ve saved several times, but the published version has 2 number 7s and no 8.

Yes, I was able to get my problematic post (which had no footnotes) to successfully update. Thanks so much for resolving this, for me at least! I appreciate it.
