How to gain access to a domain name I deleted and know hasn't been taken again?

I deleted my blog with a domain name I wanted because I was having problems trying to coordinate it with my username. I thought I’d solved the problem and could simply sign up the blog with the same address, but it keeps saying it’s taken when I know its not. How do I claim it again?

Gone is gone forever even from you – you were told three times that delete was forever and you agreed to those terms. That also included an email you had to click on to delete –

A lot of people have this experience. Unfortunately, nobody has come up with a warning that truly drives it home.
What I usually recommend is creating a URL that’s just a placeholder, whatever.wordpress.com, and getting the domain upgrade for $18 a year to make it whatever.com or whatever.org.

Morning raincoaster – so many deleted names and NOBODY really reads the deletion terms – and WordPress.COM seems to always be looking to make money – why not turn deleted blogs into a profit center? If it was your own blog name you pay some money and get an empty blog back? Maybe $ 25 to $ 35 or whatever –

Or you can purchase a domain name via a domain mapping upgrade as in that case it will not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is.

Ransoming deleted blog names? I can see them going for that, although it’s pretty anti-third-world.
