how to get a WordPress domain back

  Hi, someone in my org accidentally gave up a domain name that was previously used within our WordPress web site. Is there a way for me to get it back now? When I try to search for it within WordPress it shows that it is still unable to take. In other words, it has not been released yet from WordPress. Can I get it back right now? Thanks. John
