How to get an expired domain to work at WordPress?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I’ve got a WordPress blog with a paid Premum subscription in a different account, to which I linked a .com domain. A domain name originally registered under WIX which has recently expired.

Even though the domain name shows on my WordPress.com control panel, an error message says that the DNS needs to be configured, and the domain name still links to a now unexistent site in WIX.

¿What do I have to do to make the domain name work properly?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

    What is the domain?

If the domain expired with Wix, it means you no longer own it. All the domain mapping upgrade on WordPress.com does is to connect an existing domain to us, but once a domain expires it doesn’t exist any more and the mapping upgrade won’t work. You will need to renew the domain and regain ownership over it before the mapping will work again.

    Hi,

    It’s pilarboullosa.com.

Since it’s already expired, isn’t there a way to register it through WordPress as the domain included in the Premium account instead of mapping it?

  • Expired domains are not released immediately, but go through an expiration process of around 90 days. If your domain with Wix recently expired it’s still in this process and not available to register anywhere else yet.

When they release it, you should be able to register it here, but not before then.

    Hi again,

Sorry I took this long to reply. Given the situation, my client has decided to cancel the WordPress Premium plan until he gets the domain back and get the refund (it’s been less than 30 days since the subscription was paid).

    I have two questions:

    a) While cancelling the subscription, a message shows up saying that a certain amount (13€) will not be refunded because of the domain mapping. The pricing section (https://en.wordpress.com/pricing/) clearly states that the custom domain is included for free, and the refund conditions states that the cost will be refunded fully if the credit was used to map an existing domain (https://en.support.wordpress.com/refunds/). Why are those 13€ being charged?

    b) It also says that the domain will not be removed so visitors can still access the service. Given that the domain was registered through Wix (though expired at the moment) and that you can’t transfer domains to WordPress, does this apply to my domain? Or will my client find out that the domain name is blocked by WordPress once Wix unblocks it?

  • I can manually refund the domain mapping upgrade once the plan is cancelled, but I will need the actual username that owns the domain to post here to confirm.

The message you mention in b) refers to the mapping upgrade – if you have a mapping upgrade or registered domain as part of a plan, that is not removed when you cancel the plan. But if you confirm as the correct username I can remove that for you afterwards, and it should be possible to register the domain here once Wix releases it.

    Thank you.

The username of that account is pilarboullosablog.

To confirm that’s the correct username, I’ll ask my client to reply to this post using that account once the plan is cancelled, as you said.

  • Thanks. Once they reply here I can process that refund.

    Hi,

I confirm the previous request to get the full refund and fully remove the mapping related to the domain I requested.

I have already cancelled the plan.

    Thank you for your help.

  • Thank you for confirming. You can view receipts for the full refund here:

    https://wordpress.com/me/purchases/billing/

You should receive the refund in about 10 business days, depending on your bank.
