Hi,
Perhaps the most important thing to do is to continue to produce quality material on the site, as you’ve been doing. Visiting other sites and commenting on them, and following other sites, often lead to reciprocal actions. To specifically encourage visitors to follow your site you may also add a Follow Blog widget, and a Follow Button widget. However, also be aware that, as the Follow Blog Widget support page notes:
Readers who are logged in to WordPress.com can also follow your blog using the follow button in the top toolbar. Readers not logged in to WordPress.com will see a follow button on the bottom right corner of your site if you have the follow blog button activated at Settings -> Reading.
You may also invite selected users to follow your site as described in the “Invite People to Follow Your Blog” section of the Inviting Contributors, Followers, and Viewers support page.
-
See also the External Follow Button support page if you are considering adding a follow button directing to your WordPress.com site on other sites.

Here are some tips.
If you want to increase traffic then don’t listen to anyone who professes there are passive ways of doing that. Increasing traffic to a blog is hard work. If you want your blog to rank well in search engine results and secure a traffic flow from the SERPs (search engine page results) then that begins with creating and publishing original content posts (not pages) ie. unique content that cannot be found anywhere else on the internet. It is commenting on other blogs with similar content that encourages traffic to flow to your own blog. If you are a WordPress.com blogger there are onsite tools you can use to find blogs by subject matter that are hosted on this multiuser blogging platform http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2014/01/20/finding-blogs-with-similar-content/ However, do NOT stop there because the classic error new bloggers tend to make here is focusing only on gaining traffic from this site alone.
These 5 videos introduce how Google discovers, crawls, indexes your site’s pages, and how Google displays them in search results. It also touches lightly upon challenges webmasters and search engines face, such as duplicate content http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/03/22/5google-webmasters-video-tutorials/
If you are using a WordPress.com theme good SEO is a given.

Whether you write informative, persuasive or controversial content learning how search engines work, and how to apply basic SEO to you content will benefit your blog as it will increase traffic from targeted readers. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/10/21/two-seo-videos-for-bloggers/

Keep in mind that you don’t really care if the person following you has their own blog or not – you want people that are interested in reading your site – I subscribe to many sites – I think only one of them subscribes to mine – most of the blogs I read are not related to what I write on my site and one site is ran by a 75 year old or so grandmother and is about pinching pennies and making the food bank food go farther – I doubt she has ever been on a boat or lives close to water – so I would not expect her to be interested in what I write
