How to get category widget hierarchy to work

Despite having ‘show hierarchy’ selected in the category widget, categories are displayed as completely flat. I am a .com user, not a .org user, so I cannot simply use a better widget, but have to get this widget to work as it says it should. Is this possible? Or does the provided widget simply not work, and hasn’t for years?

Yes, I looked for this problem being discussed in the forum, but the discussions I am seeing are from many years ago.

I tried the categories widget on a test blog and it displayed the hierarchy properly.

To show the hierarchy with the categories widget, categories need to have a parent and child setup. For example, on my test blog I have an Animals parent category with Dogs and Cats as child categories. Navigating to WP Admin > Posts > Categories shows this: https://cloudup.com/cpuEbah91AW

In the screenshot, Cats and Dogs have a dash indicating they are children of the Animals category above. If your categories page does not show something similar (categories with the dash), then your hierarchy is flat.

Also note that if you set up a child category, but don’t have any posts tagged with it, then the category won’t show in the categories widget.

I have the parent and child setup, and it shows as such when I am manipulating the widget, but does not on the actual website. I am also not having problem with missing child categories. It is halfway working, in that the categories are arranged as though they would be hierarchical (not alphabetical), but without any indenting or other indication of parent/child.

I’m going to test and see if I have the same problem with a different theme…

Well, I’ll be darned. It is apparently just a problem with Pictorico. Problem not solved, but but sidestepped, I guess.
