how to get image across entire width of main column?

    I am using Pink Touch 2 and understand that my main column width is 510. I would like pictures i post to a) load fast and b) to go across the width of the blog, especially for landscape. but i cannot figure out what to do. all my photos are high quality pixel wise to work. but i am confused about how to edit them to make them automatically fit the width of the blog column to give it a nice streamline feel.
