How to get my original account name back?

When I renamed my account and the day after tried to change it back to the original name I got following message: Sorry, that username already exist! This is obviously not correct. Just to try, I typed in the original name and the response was that this site is no longer available because the author has deleted it.

Username accounts are never deleted at WordPress.com.

The URLs of blogs that are deleted are not recycled and cannot be used by anyone.
