How to get plugins?
-
Been watching the Bluehost tutorials on WordPress. He has plugins for doing galleries and a resume. If I go Premium do I get plugins? I can’t understand the answer above.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Bluehost tutorials are not related to WordPress.COM software. They are for WordPress.ORG software only. Read http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
The answer to your question is no.
re: plugins
WordPress.com is a multiuser blogging platform. Our blogs are not free standing. There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs and we bloggers cannot install any plugins. There is no upgrade you can purchase that will provide FTP access and the ability to install plugins, upload themes, and/or edit templates and themes in a free hosted WordPress.com blog.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/
To use plugins you must hire a web host and then set up your own WordPress.org install. -
Please take note that the only relevant support documentation for free hosted WordPress.com blogs is at http://support.wordpress.com and stop reading stuff that does not apply to our software as it will only confuse you.
For galleries see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/

Thorough, informative, and a bit snippy at the end. So I sat through these breezy tutorials where it all looks so easy and this stuff is not accessible. So if I give them $100 they’ll give me a few tools, but if I give somebody else $200 they’ll give me a playpen? I’m a little mystified.
I can embed SoundCloud on there. No youtube? I was wondering about this when I saw his link and compared it with the literature I’ve been poring over.
They get you wherever you turn. I don’t have a computer. I have to drive 20 miles to get to a desktop to upgrade my skills and my online materials. -
Galleries are built in, YouTube embeds fine, I think Sound Cloud embeds also.
If you want a Resume on here, not a big deal, there are plenty of formatting tools to make a very nice resume.
a blog at WordPress.COM is about as easy as it gets, way easier than a WordPress.ORG site

Galleries are where? Yes, just saw that I can embed video. I already made a resume page tonight. It’s just a download link to a Word file. It’s OK, but I started that out thinking I could get Google Doc Embed. First, I can’t, and when I saw what Google Docs did in the conversion I decided I couldn’t go with that.
I understand that it’s supposed to be easy, and for what it does I guess you could say that, but things sometimes don’t take. I’m having a devil of a time with Categories and Widgets.
Thanks. Would like a response. -
For galleries start here http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/
The best place to find information about what you can do on WordPress.com is our Support documentation, which you can find here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/ The Search box there is very good at returning not only support docs but also relevant forum replies.
If you haven’t yet, you may also want to review http://learn.wordpress.com/ and there is a new series of posts on WPcom’s Daily Post on “Zero to Hero”, which, while winding down, you can find here http://dailypost.wordpress.com/zero-to-hero/
Conveniently, they’ve just posted a video on adding widgets. :) http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2014/01/25/adding-widgets-to-your-site/
Hope that helped.

What about adding a header photo to a theme? I changed my theme to the Untitled one, which shows a train from the side. I can’t see how to get any photo at the top because it wants a very narrow slice of anything I load. So how did the developer get that shot on this theme? I really want a picture. Not having one defeats the cleverness of my blog’s title.
-
Untitled theme description http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/untitled/
The header image on Untitled doesn’t work as on most themes. It’s not designed for a full-width image, it’s designed for a small logo. The train is not the header image. Check the theme’s live demo site: http://untitleddemo.wordpress.com/
Go to the theme description page I linked to above please and scroll down to
“To set up Untitled’s Front Page Slider:”
Navigate to Settings → Reading.
Scroll down to the section labeled “Featured Content”.
Enter the name of a tag.
Click the blue “Save Changes” button at the bottom.
Create a post with a featured image that’s at least 1024px wide.
Note: The featured image will look best at these dimensions: 1440px wide, 400px tall.
Give the post the tag you declared under Settings → Reading → Featured Content. -
That looks like great information. A few things: I can’t work on it today, and I hope that works out as described. I am going to follow all of your directions explicitly. I’m going to check out the site now.
Also, what happens to widgets that you grab from the sidebar area on the right (dashboard) and drag to the bottom? I have two things that say SoundCloud on live site, and I don’t understand what’s happening on dashboard. I try to tell it to show when there’s a podcast but there’s no podcast choice in list. I made that category. There are no podcasts done yet. Thank you very much. Excellent help here. -
So the picture (if I do it right) has to be a certain shape and size and must necessarily change with each new post, with this theme?
Thanks. -
How did I originally post? Couldn’t figure it out last night. Here’s the thing: I’m going to change my blog address. I know what to do. But look at Step 6 of Changing Your Blog Address. It asks Matching Username? No is the answer if you want to keep it the same; no changes. It has been confusing me for days. I finally got it when I watched the video and the man just says, “If you don’t want to deal with all that, just click No”. It’s unbelievably poorly written considering the resources here. Someone go look at that section.

Did my first post containing links and they don’t work. When I hover over them with the mouse my description is displayed. When I click they all say “web page not available”.
I’ve practiced in emails; they all work.
Same case on phone and computer. Copied, pasted, hit the link button; everything done right. Embarrassing. My links don’t work. Why? -
So frustrated. I have Untitled theme and am mystified. I have a slider on the front page with nothing in it. If I have selected a feature image how and why would I get featured images, as the directions say? Nobody’s answering.
Why would the slider be empty? How to populate it? I don’t have time to search! I have been doing this all day. -

Don’t know. Away from computer again. But I can give specifics. My site is onthetopstep.com. What I did was link to tables at baseball-reference.com. On each table there is a “link” link. You click on it, it shows you the url…I right-clicked and copied it.
I went back to post editor, highlighted a word or two, and the link button goes live. I clicked that and pasted the url. I wanted to link to those tables, not the entire busy pages. I won’t trust that again.
I am so hungry, frustrated and tired. -
-
As I said, my computer time is over. I can tell you where to find them. Go to baseball-reference.com. Search for Pete Kozma. Find the table called Standard Batting. That’s it.
Search for Jhonny Peralta. The table is Postseason. Search for Matt Carpenter. I think the table is Advanced Batting.
Above each table, at the right, it says “link” underlined.
Thanks.
