The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Every post you publish will be automatically added to the archives by the software and will display when you place the archives widget in your sidebar. http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/archives-widget/ If you prefer you can create a static page and use the archives shortcode http://en.support.wordpress.com/archives-shortcode/

Yes. It is automatic.
The part that is not automatic is that you need a widget or shortcode to view old posts.previously discussed:
Here is how you can find old posts:

After you set up the archive widget and the posts are archived, do you just delete them from the main page?
-
kenwalt,
And how would you do that? Deleting a posts means deleting it from the blog as a whole. The front page is mot a separate page, it is a dynamic page generated on-the-fly showing your most recent posts. You can not selectively “delete” posts from the front page. -
I didn’t know that…I still pretty new at this. It just seems having potentially dozens of posts is cluttered. My main page still shows all of the blogs I’ve written–I think. I haven’t written that many and its only been a couple of months. So, another question comes to mind: What is the definition of “most recent”? If older ones go into archives automatically, I’m cool with that, and the “Archives” serve as a filing cabinet. I just didn’t know if I needed to do something to archive them other than make the archive available.

It seems like you can go to “edit posts,” mark and trash posts selectively, for what that’s worth.
-
The number of posts showing on your front page is determined by
Settings > Reading e.g. show at most 10 posts, then the ten most recent posts will be on your front page.
Excess older posts are on page 2, 3 and so on, e.g. blogname.wordpress.com/page/2/,
blogname.wordpress.com/page/3/ and so onThe archive needs to be created for it to be visible, by making an archives page and using the archives shortcode as timethief explained above.

Thank you very much husdal. I didn’t know about the possiblity of a settings limit on shows. I did understand that the archive had to be created to make them visible to viewers, just how to make them invisible on the main page. My postings have been centered on Christmas, and now that it’s past, I wanted to set the blog in a new direction. I have just taught myself that trashing a post completely trashes it, both from the main page and from the archive. Now I understand how to do it…thanks again.
