How to get recognized by search engine?

I just setup by wordpress site/blog. How does it get or how can I get it ‘recognized’ by search engines?

What is the point of visiting this web site http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/ and then verifying your blog with each search engine? I don’t understand how by doing this traffic to your blog is increased.

I ran into some trouble trying to register with Yahoo.
I went to this link http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/.
I got through the first five steps. On the six step there is no where on the Tools page for me to copy and past the meta tag to. There is no “appropriate field.”
On the Yahoo verification page it says this: The META tag must be within and near the beginning of the first <HEAD> section of the page, and before the first <BODY> section.
Where would I find the <HEAD> section and before the <BODY>? I’m slightly familiar with HTML, but I recognize those terms with a web page and not a main web site.
I guess I need to find the HTML code for my sites home page on WordPress.

That’s because Yahoo recently got OUT of the search engine business altogether, so being able to put your code in wouldn’t help you. Don’t worry about it.
