How to get rid of extra text in widgets?

  • Unknown's avatar

In my site thoughtforfoodaw.wordpress.com I have ‘Archives’ widgets which work well, but each shows two dates underneath. I don’t know why and can’t get rid of them.
And on the next widget, ‘Blogs I follow’ it says underneath: “You are not yet following any blogs” etc. Why does it say that, and how can I get rid of it?
    Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Those are 5 Archive widgets with a different title starting with a month name. You can remove them if you wish from Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > relevant sidebar panel.

Is there a reason you named them after months? Could you let me know what are wanting to do?

I can’t find ‘Blogs I Follow’ widget. Have you removed it?

Thanks for replying! I thought I’d receive email, which is why I did not react before. Only just now I saw the ‘notify me’ thingy ….

They are given month names, because the sowing/eating advise and the recipes are seasonal. Eventually I’d like to order them alphabetically by subject as well.

I know how to remove Archive widgets. I don’t want to remove them. But when I view a post, below every single title like “April ’15 insomnia” it says “March 2015” and “Feb 2015”. I can’t seem to get rid of that.

As to “Blogs I follow”: when I view my blog it shows: “http://thoughtforfood-aw.blogspot.co.uk”, “http://vegplotting.blogspot.com” etc etc.; but underneath every website it says “

You are not yet following any blogs. Try finding your friends or check out our recommended blogs

    .”
How can I get rid of that please?

    Thank you! Love A.

  • Archives widget is an inappropriate choice for what you are wanting to do.

Archives widget organizes your previously published posts by month.

For what you are hoping to do a Text Widget with relevant links is a good idea. So you can create one text widget per month and add HTML to link to monthly archives.

I still can’t find “Blogs I follow” on your blog.

Thanks! That sorted out one problem.

I deleted all the ‘blogs I follow’ widgets and started from scratch with just one: it does now appear at the top, above ‘Jan 2015’ etc, and it says:

http://vegplotting.blogspot.co.uk/ You are not yet following any blogs. Try finding your friends or check out our recommended blogs.

Doesn’t it show on your screen?

    xA

I’ve now deleted the one remaining ‘blogs I follow’ widget as well as it looked so stupid.
Which widget do you recommend I use, to show some blogs that I like and are relevant?

You can create a Blogroll in your Dashboard http://en.support.wordpress.com/blogroll/add-a-blogroll-link/ and display it by installing the Links widget. http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/links-widget/

You can create your own list in a text widget. Start by creating a draft post you will delete.
This is the general link model:
    <a href="URL HERE">Highlighted anchor text here</a>
This is the visual result – it’s not actually linked here in the forum.
    Highlighted anchor text here

    1. Enter the relevant descriptive anchor text you want to link to first. Note that “here” is not a good choice.
    2. Then use your mouse to highlight that anchor text. (If you don’t highlight the anchor text the chain icon will remain grayed out and not be useable.)
    3. Next click the chain icon in the editor and proceed to create the link.

Then when your draft is looking good switch to the HTML editor and copy your code into a text widget.

Thank you. This will take some time for me to understand and mess around with. I did try a Blogroll, but could not work out how to do it – that’s the problem generally!
However, I’ll play around for a while.
By the way I did not get a notification, though I have clicked on ‘notify me’ below. ??

Oh yes, and having used the ‘text’ widget (to say ‘April 2015 insomnia’ etc), I expected that people could click on it and then be taken to the relevant blog page, but you can’t. Why is that?

  • @awigmore

You have added only the Title for the text widget. In the big box below the “April 2015: insomnia” Title, add the following code:

    <a href="https://thoughtforfoodaw.wordpress.com/2015/03/23/april-2015-insomnia-2/">April 2015: insomnia</a>

This is only for April. You need to repeat this process to add links for for rest of the months.

Copy the above code and replace the relevant link and the text.

Text Widget Links support document teaches you how to add a link. Please go through it but don’t hesitate to let us know if something is still unclear. We are here to help :-)

Thanks for your help but I’m afraid I give up and stick which ‘blogger’, which I’m used to and can just about manage …..
    Sorry! xA.

  • I am sorry that you decided to go.

I see that you already added a link for April. Are you facing trouble determining links for other months?

Please feel free to let me know if I can do something for you to keep you on WordPress.com. I’d be more than happy to help :-)

Your instruction for April was clear enough but I had a try at adapting it for another month but got hopelessly confused as usual. I don’t know HTML and am unable to learn it I’m afraid. So ….

  • Ok, no problem.

I added the following html to each of your text widgets respectively and you see the result on your sidebar.

Yes, thank you!! When next I have time I will study any other problems, and see what I can ask.
    Love A.

  • Sure, you are most welcome :-)

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes I’ve got another question. In Jan, Feb and March, whenever I started a new line, it skipped one. So that the whole thing is much longer than it needs to be. Whereas in April, May and June it doesn’t. Why is that, and how can I get rid of this skipping please?

  • I did not understand what do you mean by skipping. Could you please elaborate?

May be because, April and June post titles are shorter than the titles of the rest of the months.

  • Unknown's avatar

    No, what I mean is:
when I press enter to start a new line like so:
then it skips a whole line.
Look at the ‘recipes’ in the January blog: after the name of each recipe there is an empty line before is lists the ingredients.
And then after the ingredients there is another empty line.
Whereas in April, May and June there isn’t, although I typed them exactly the same way.

  • Unknown's avatar

And another question. I just added ‘July’, just to see where it ended up. How can I affect the order of the blogs? I would like ‘July’ to go after ‘June’.
