How to get rid of "leave a comment" and "leave a reply" boxes

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. I’m using my site as a site, not a blog, so comments and typical blog interaction don’t work for me. I’m a newbie here and using the Responsive theme. What do I do? Change themes? Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Oh, not at all! You can disable the comment box from appearing in any future pages by going to your Settings >> Discussion page and disabling anything relating to comments there.

Already-created comments will have to be disabled in another way, and it’s a bit more complicated. We have a help article on it, and I suggest you read it through first because the box you have to uncheck on each page doesn’t appear by default. You have to enable it (and most people miss that part). We do have screenshots though, so hopefully you’ll be able to find the setting! Let me know if you can’t though.

    Here’s that article:

Many, many thanks. That did the trick. Now to a new issue: I can’t get anything to display in my top menu except “Home.” Thus far I’ve created an “About” page and an “Articles” page. Haven’t added anything to them, but they are privately published. When I try to create a menu under that setting, nothing shows up to select in the pages portion of the module at the left. Sorry for such basic questions!

Not that basic at all. The reason for that is because a page has to be public in order for it to be linked to in a menu.

You’ve got a couple of options here: You can set the pages to be password protected instead of private, which will still allow only people who have the password (presumably just you) to view the actual content, but will let the link appear.

Alternatively (and not as highly recommended) is that you can grab the full URL of the page and create a custom link just using that URL. I would test it fully though to make sure that when you’re logged out nobody else can view it. You don’t want personal content being accessed because of the link, of course!

Understand the latter. Sounds like I should finish building my content on however many pages I need, then publish publicly and set my menus (and click on everything from outside make sure it works!). Simplistic, but probably the least painful?

BTW — thanks very much for the info. Is there some basic how-to (aside from support docs) that would keep me from bothering you guys? LOL

The only thing that we have available are our support docs at http://en.support.wordpress.com. We’re always building them out and refining what is already there, but I know that some questions just aren’t answered.

Never be afraid to drop us a line! Sometimes it might take us a day or two to get back to you (for which I apologize), but we’re happy to help.

In regard to this issue, yes I would say it would probably be best to build your content out fully and then set your menus. If nothing else, if you worry about menus before hand a lot of people end up wasting time worrying about spacing and how things look when it’s all going to be changing when the next page gets added. Better to get everything up so you know what you’re looking at! :)

Good advice. That’s what I just did. Really basic and plain, but at least it’s out there, for business purposes. Thanks for following up.

One more question — in Responsive, is there any way to add a different sidebar widget to each page and not have them all show up in every page?

    Thanks!

There is actually a trick which can be used for any of our blogs:

    Widgets

Basically you can change the visibility for any individual widget and control when each one displays and when it doesn’t. It may require a certain amount of creativity, but you can have a certain widget (or set of widgets) only show on a single page and do the same thing for each of your pages.

Let me know if you have any questions!
