How to get tags added to Mastodon posts as hashtags?

How do I get the WordPress tags on a post added as hashtags to the Mastodon post that WordPress will now create when publishing?

    Thanks!

  • Hi there,

We use the Mastodon API to share blog posts on your account there, but we are limited in that we cannot add our own functionality, only use what is provided in the API.

I this case, there is not a way to auto-convert WordPress post tags into Mastodon hashtags, as the only way to add those is to type them in directly.

It seems kind of silly that WordPress couldn’t add the tags to the end of the post before sending it via the API.

  • @swduncan, I haven’t had a chance to test this yet, but have you considered customizing the social sharing message, and adding the hashtags there?

Tags are useful on most platforms in my experience. I did get a chance to test the social sharing message just now, and I was able to add tags there and they showed up fine on Mastodon. Might be a good option for you @swduncan.

Great to have an option to automatically append tags as #hashtags to the body of the post.

Just to expand on what @supernovia mentioned, did you know that you can write a custom message for your connected social media sites? Here’s more on that: https://wordpress.com/support/post-automatically-to-social-media/#share-a-post

You can add your hashtags directly in the custom message box that should be shared on your social media platforms.

  • I just checked the latest post on swduncan.com and I can see the hashtags on my Mastodon instance.

Hi pfefferle – Yes, the recent fediverse integration/ActivityPub plugin does include tags as hashtages, but not the marketing connection to Mastodon does not. ActivityPub doesn’t solve the problem.

The ActivityPub route creates an account on Mastodon that can’t follow anyone, can’t see mentions, and can’t be posted to without using WordPress. So any short-form stuff needs to come from a different account, which is separate. While I _love_the hashtag inclusion, the extra unbranded account is an unwanted complication.

  • Ah, sorry for misunderstanding the issue! I thought this was about the ActivityPub integration!
