how to get the best domain for a pending WP business subscription
-
I plan to subscribe to WP Business for my small business website but have found the domain that I want — http://www.blablabla.ca — isn’t offered via the WP website. Can I, or should I, purchase the domain and try to use it with wordpress (re-routing or whatever other options exist, I don’t know) or am I better to just subscribe to WP business and use the domains they have available?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello there!
When you search for domain availability on WordPress.com, you are actually searching internet-wide to see if a domain name is free. If you are getting a message on WordPress.com that a domain cannot be used, you will not find it elsewhere. Domain names are universally unique — once somebody owns one, it belongs only the them, and cannot be used by another user.
You can register blablabla with a different extension, if it’s available (ie. .edu, .org, etc). The list of available extension can be found here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/I hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks much!

Thanks for the reply Robyn. The domain I want is .ca a suffix though and that doesn’t appear to be available through WP. They offer the equivalent of what I want .net, .org. and whole other assortment but, being here in Canada, next to .com, the desired address would be .ca
Does that make sense?

Does that make sense? It does make sense. If you absolutely want the .ca extension, you’ll have to adjust the actual name (blablabla) of your domain to something that is free.
You can always see which domain names are available by using this site:
http://who.is/Just plug in the domain names (with the .ca extension) in which you’re interested, and you’ll find out immediately if they’re available for purchase.
Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers!

Hi Robyn, thanks again. I think I see what you’re saying but we’re coming at this from different directions…
I’ve purchased the domain http://www.bemyeditor.ca – it’s mine. WordPress, as far as I can see, doesn’t seem to offer or recognize .ca addresses. It’s not in the drop-down menu anyway. (Again, I could have taken http://www.bemyeditor.net, .org, etc. but want the .ca)
I’ve seen something on mapping (an existing) domain so am hoping I can plug this address in somewhere.
I’d like to get moving on this but I have to specify the domain when I subscribe for the WP business, right?

Great! We can indeed map your WordPress.com business site to your domain, bemyeditor.ca. Instructions for domain mapping can be found here:
By the way: You do not need to specify a custom domain when signing up. That can be done later, if you’d like. You’ll only need a WordPress.com site.
I hope this helps a bit more. Let me know if I can answer any other questions. If you try the mapping and need assistance, I’m happy to help.
