How to get the slider option to work on the TwentyFourteen Theme

  I’m new to WordPress and using the basic free program with the TwentyFourteen Theme but I’m having trouble getting the Slider option to work…. switching between Grid and Slider appearances don’t have any effect. What am I missing?
