hey people im new to the wordpress world.
    <img src=http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/4594/awgawhgkz2.jpg><BR>
I wanted to know how i may make this layout into a wordpress theme, I mean i know i must customize an already made theme into it(easiest way) but i have certain specifications, i want the header to cover the entire top of the page like it’s shown, and i want the posts to appear in the grey blank space,i want the buttons to be on the header, and i would want a right sidebar for other advertisement or buttons i may decide to implement, is there any themes out there you’d suggest me to edit into this?

thanks in advance it is greatly appreciated

As we are all on a multi-user blogging platform we cannot edit our themes at wordpress.com. If we could then whatever editing we did would affect the blogs of all other bloggers who had the same them. However, we can customize the css if we purchase the upgrade and have the skills to do so.

You have also mentioned advertisements so I’ll refer you to this section of our FAQs as we are not allowed to have anything more than a single discrete affiliate link on either our About page or in a text widget in our sidebars http://faq.wordpress.com/?s=adsense
You will also need to take note of the purple coloured section in the Terms of Service contract you agreed to to have a blog here http://wordpress.com/tos/

WordPress offers three different options for personalizing themes.
    (1) You can edit your theme’s css style sheet or create one of your own only if you purchase an upgrade and undertake css customization but you cannot use javascript for security reasons.

    (2) If you don’t purchase the upgrade, you can alter the appearance of your theme only through the use of customized headers and sidebar widgets. Note that if you do not opt for the upgrade then this link has information on point for you to read.

    (3) Although some themes at wordpress.org and wordpress.com may appear to be the same they are not; the software is different. The “please read me first before posting” pink sticky at the head of the forum outlines the differences between wordpress.com blogs and wordpress.org blogs which are on different code bases.

At wordpress.com we are on a shared multiuser blogging platform and we are not allowed to use iframes, forms, some media embeds and styles, etc. or for security reasons.

    Two wordpress.com options.
    (1) You can choose a theme from the admin area of your blog -> Dashboard -> Presentation -> Themes and select one as is. Many provide for a customized a header and sidebar widgets allow for posting of unique images, etc. to personalize your blog.

If you do not wish to use one of the themes made available at wordpress.com through your admin section -> Dashboard -> Presentation -> Themes then you can choose to undertake css customizing a wordpress.com theme or make your own, or you can move to self hosting or a web host and altering a free wordpress.org template.

    (2) CSS customization can be used to improve on any existing theme; you can define your own classes for use in posts; you can select the Sandbox theme and build on one of the Minimalist layouts or, opt for no stylesheet and do it all yourself. If you feel you are up to the challenge of customizing a theme then these link, link, link will be helpful. There are also css resources that you can access listed in the FAQs blog.

The upgrade is not recommended to bloggers who do not have css cutomization experience. Although there is a forum and other bloggers may volunteer to help you if needs be, there is no staff support provided for learning css customization.

The 15$ you pay to upgrade a wordpress.com blog enables you to to alter the appearance of your theme and but not the underlying php code. Purchasing the upgrade entitles you to customize css on one blog for one year.

If you don’t have a WordPress.com-hosted blog, you should head over to WordPress.org’s support forum. They can help you there.

Sheesh am I ever glad I had my copy and paste answer ready to go :D

I know, that was a serious tome! I felt bad for you typing it out. Also, we are getting more of these than usual, aren’t we? All these “I’d like to complain about/ask for help with something…that doesn’t apply here” kind of things, etc.

If we got a dollar head tax for every lost soul that belonged in the wordpress.org, failed to read the “please read me first” sticky, and had to be redirected there we could buy a bottle of Mum’s in no time.

Part of the issue I’ve discovered is some versions of the widget plugin point to wp.com instead of wp.org.

Makes me wonder though when we see people say that “I search for wordpress help and was directed here” and then see this with the other site listed as #1. I wonder what folks are searching for.

And, like I said, having the moderator have access to the user’s list of blogs would be a very big help around here.
