How to go from WP host to self-host?

I bought “WordPress All In One for Dummies” and it said WP could be used as a CMS. I thought I’d build a portal and web pages for a master’s degree portfolio. I don’t necessarily need to blog.

I tried following the example to create a static page but the example said the author was self-hosting rather than use the WP host.

So is it true that you can only use WP as a CMS if you self-host or pay someone to host your site?

Since I already signed up for a WP hosted account (HollyStiegel.wordpress.com), how can I change it to be a self-hosted site?

    Thanks for help!

  • Hi! WordPress can be used as a CMS on both WordPress.com and WordPress.org (self-hosted) sites. A lot depends on what types of flexibility you need and what your level of comfort is with setting up plugins and websites.

We have some details on the differences between the two platforms in our support docs.

If, after reading that, a self-hosted site seems like it’d work better for you then you’ll first need a web hosting account. We have some recommendations here.

Once you have the site set up you’ll find steps for moving your content in our support docs as well.
