How to have brief text on home page?

How do I have only brief text of post on home page and then have readers click read more to go to main page of post? My posts are long and so it is annoying to scroll endlessly through the home page.
I’ve gone to the read option under settings and clicked on summary instead of full text but that hasn’t done anything.

The summery option under settings—>reading applies to your feed and not how your posts are displayed on your front page.
