How to have only one post show at a time on the homepage?

Hi,
I’m just wondering how I might make it so that only one post shows at a time on the homepage? I am inserting lots of pictures and slideshows into each post and I was advised that if not made separate it may cause the page to load too slowly.
I’ve searched the forums and played around a little bit but haven’t figured it out yet, if anyone knows how to do this I’d love if you could point me in the right direction…

You can set the number of posts to display on your front page here > Settings > Reading
Blog pages show at most __posts
Note: some themes are code to display only one post on the front page but yours is not one of them. -
Dashboard > Settings > Reading > Find “Blog pages show at most” > change to 1 post > Save
