How to hide a page

I’m trying to use this for the first time. I made the default page and a static page. I want to build a web site with pages, not a blog.
How do I hide the default page? I have one page set as having no parent, in the attributes. Yet the site, or whatever you call it, still shows both the original and the new page that is set to be Home. How do I really hide the default page?

    Hello there,
By creating a custom menu you can choose which to display and which to hide. Let’s start here though, you cannot post to pages. Pages are static and sit outside the blog structure. With wordpress, you use categories to organize posts into subjects and then you can add those categories to your navigation using a custom menu.

    What’s critical is:
    (1) a clear comprehension of the differences between pages and posts > http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
    (2) a clear comprehension of the fact that there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts and we cannot post to more than that one page. But we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.

We organize our posts by assigning Categories to them. When we publish a post it automatically appears on the running page for posts and also on the Categories pages and Archives pages. Note: There must be one published post in each Category in order for there to be anything to display.

A custom menu allows you to display Categories with drop-downs to sub-categories in tabs along the horizontal navigation where normally only Pages tabs are displayed. If you wish you can also include Pages with drop-downs to sub-pages and/or custom links in your custom menu as well. You are in charge of what appears in a custom menu. You choose the order in which to display any and/or all the foregoing in your custom menu. You choose which to display and which to hide. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus

Also note that if you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page for your site, and also create a “blog” page for your posts to display on, but that’s optional.

Thank you. At the moment I don’t need a blog post at all. How do I remove the “Leave a Reply” section from the page? Or did I still not set up a static front page correctly yet?

I did not realize you wanted a strictly page based structure.
This page > Settings > Discussion
Discussion settings is where you set up defaults for comments.
We can also override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any post or page.
Depending on the theme used when we close comments a phrase like “comments closed” or a similar phrase may appear and if so, it can only be removed by CSS editing after purchasing a custom design upgrade.

In order to have a static front page you create two pages with no content. One is titled “Welcome” or whatever you wish and the other is titled “Blog” or whatever you wish. Then you assign those 2 pages on this page > Settings > Reading
    Reading Settings
    Front page displays
    __Your latest posts

    __A static page (select below)
    Front page:
    Posts page

I’m trying WordPress as a possible replacement for iWeb. I use iWeb to maintain two very simple websites, each with a navigation strip at the top, and several pages with some pictures and text.

I don’t want any page to contain a Leave a Reply box. Is this possible with WordPress? Is there a requirement to have one page that takes posts? (that would be fine).

Which template would be a simple starting point? So far I’ve been unable to remove the Leave a Reply section. I unchecked every box in Settings / Discussions. Thanks.

Yes, the default is open comments. Provided you use the instructions I posted above for disabling discussion the comment boxes will be gone.

    Yes.

Which template would be a simple starting point?

There are over 150 themes to choose form. There is a Themes Showcase and live demos are provided.

So far I’ve been unable to remove the Leave a Reply section. I unchecked every box in Settings / Discussions. Thanks.

The instructions I provided are correct. Continue from … “We can also override …” to disable the comments displaying on your Pages.

I was having the same problem. Found a solution that worked for me.
    Go to Pages
Click on Bulk Actions at the top of the pages list.
    Click on Edit.
Check the box next to every page that you want to lose the “Leave A Reply” box.
    Click on Apply.
I checked every page on my site, and all of the Leave A Reply boxes were gone.
Hope this works for you. Diane

Oh dear. Forgot a step in the instructions just above.
When you click on Apply, a menu opens to the right
    Click on Comments.
A menu opens up, click on Do Not Allow.
Hope that didn’t cause any confusion.
    Diane
