How to hide selected posts from displaying on front page.

How can I hide or filter certain posts from showing on the front page. My goal is to allow older, select posts ‘to move up’ on the front page and still have recent post in chronological order.
Basically, a category that can be checked or unchecked which would qualify/disqualify a post from the default category or the category that is associated with the front page?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The ‘sticky’ enlarges the featured image so to attach this to more than a few posts would decrease the number of visible posts not to mention the visual effect.
This would work if there were an option to choose how many enlarged featured images were displayed.

This is an intentional feature of your theme, Suburbia. It’s meant to use sticky posts to enlarge and feature your chosen posts. If you don’t want that, you might look into some other similar themes that don’t create any visual difference for the sticky posts. Here are a couple of examples:
