how to i try different themes?
-
i am new to wordpress. i want to sample themes before i select one for my site. how do i sample themes? i feel locked into a theme.
Blog url: http://digtanya.wordpress.com/The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
I don’t know why you feel locked in. Go to your Dashboard->Appearance->Themes and click on any of the themes to preview how your particular blog looks in that theme. Change at will.
-
-
-
-
Then on the main Dashboard page, in the sidebar on the left, you will find Appearance. Look at the column of icons. It’s there.
-
‘new post’, ‘reader’, ‘fresh;y pressed’, settings, etc. are there. NO appearance. i am on a Mac, don’t know if that makes a difference.
-
Okay, duh, I got it. Had to go to the ‘W’, saw dashboard, opened dashboard and scrolled down to appearance. Thanks for your assistance and patience. Determined to get through this. I will. I will. Sheesh.
-
Those are not what I’m talking about.
read this:

Ah, no worries. The first thing I do in my classes is explain all of those options on the Dashboard.

Well, there are two ways:
One is to hand-code every paragraph in the HTML editor. The problem is, should you change themes later, you’re stuck with that font even if it doesn’t look good with the new theme and you have to change every paragraph in your entire blog by hand. It also doesn’t change headers, widgets, titles, etc. Just the body of the post,
The second is to learn CSS editing and buy the Custom Design upgrade and edit the font right in the CSS code. Do not buy the upgrade if you don’t already know CSS.

You can also see all themes in action here:

Yes, I am able to view the themes in action. But, I did not know font size, color changes, etc. could not be done to the templates without upgrading.
-
It also says I can create multiple pages. How do I do that? Do I have to upgrade? Are the free themes, pretty much, take as is?
-
Many themes have various options (accessed in Appearance > Theme Options).
Some themes allow you to change some of the colors without the upgrade – see here:
http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/24/color-customisable-themes/You create pages in Pages > Add New.
(But note, since many users are confused re this: if what you’re interested in is displaying groups of your posts in separate pages, you don’t do that by creating pages, you do it by assigning the right category to each post.) -
Thank you so much. Will be jumping back into the creation in a few hours. These answers have been extremely helpful. Certain to have more questions as I go. This forum is terrific!
-
Okay, now I’m confused. I am using the ‘Twenty-ten’ theme. I have created pages. For example, ‘home’, ‘about’, blog’. I want to post links to my blog. But, whenever I post a link I defaults to my home page. Why is that? And, how can I post into the new pages I’ve created? Oy!

Pages are static and are for content that rarely changes. They sit outside of the blog structure and you cannot post to multiple pages in any blog. There is only one main page for posts in a blog and all posts will display on the main blog page. There is no way to exclude posts from the main posts (blog) page.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/The front page of the blog by default will display your posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. If you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts.
Choice 1 static front page
Choice 2 running page for all posts on front page
Which do you choose? It’s one or the other.
If you choose a static front page then you have to create two pages as I said above. After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page. A custom menu allows you to display Categories with drop-downs to sub-categories in tabs along the horizontal navigation where normally only Pages tabs are displayed. If you wish you can also include Pages with drop-downs to sub-pages and/or Tags pages and/or Custom Links in your custom menu as well. You are in charge of what appears in a custom menu. You choose the order in which to display any and/or all the foregoing in your custom menu. You choose which to display and which to hide. To remove any custom menu items you do not wish to be included in your custom menu see > Appearance > Menus
We organize posts by assigning categories to them. You can create a custom menu and add the categories pages that are autmatically generated by the software into the custom menu.
