How to import an existing domain from another webhost? (map existing didn't work

How can I import an existing domain that I own (from another webhost) into wordpress? It said via ‘mapping an existing domain’. I did that, but it didn’t work. Also strange that I didn’t have to give any permission to do so..

I just want to create a website. Why isn’t there a way to just indicate that I own the domain that I want to use, and get started? I don’t want a free /wordpress.com address, just want to continue with the one I own, but via wordpress and not via my current host

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. You can’t transfer the domain to WordPress.com as they don’t accept incoming domain transfers. Domain mapping is the only way to connect a domain you already own to your WordPress.com blog.

What exactly did you do to try and map the domain and at which point did the system indicate you can’t do so? What was the exact error message you saw? The correct instructions are the ones provided here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

You cannot blog on WordPress.com without a free WordPress.com address. That URL is your actual website and the mapped domain is only laid over the free WordPress.com site. If you have a self-hosted site you’ll need to export your content from that site and import it to your WordPress.com site as you cannot use the existing site on WordPress.com, only its address.
