How to import documents from Word? Works on my friend's site but not on mine
-
My friend has a website at http://www.thinkingonscripture.com, it is a WordPress site. My site is http://www.mjspock.com. My buddy can write documents in Word, using English, Greek and Hebrew characters. He can also add images in Word. Everything uploads correctly to his WordPress site. However when I do the same thing, all WordPress will do is upload the English characters. Anybody know a solution for this? Thanks

For copying and pasting from Microsoft WORD.
If you are copying and pasting from a word processing document like Microsoft WORD note that the paste as WORD button was removed months ago. If you use the Paste as plain text button then a special cleanup process will run to remove any special formatting and HTML tags that may otherwise change your text. That means you have to insert the formatting and spacing yourself.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-textWhether or not you are copying and pasting go to > Dashboard > Settings > Writing and enable this setting:
Formatting
__ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically
“save changes”Blog editors and word processors are not the same and do not work the same way. The web standard is one blank line only, so you cannot add more blank lines by pressing return repeatedly like you would do with a typewriter or in a word processing application. If you want to learn how to format and space your posts and pages see: http://en.support.wordpress.com/advanced-html/
All images have to be hosted online on a server to be displayed on your blog. Your computer is not a server. For uploading images see:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/accepted-filetypes/
For uploading images posts and pages see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/adding-images-to-posts-or-pages/
Here are more details about the options for uploading images http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/04/26/images-the-three-link-options/
For troubleshooting images see here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/troubleshooting-images/P.S. When you create a new post, always make sure the Format tool is set to Paragraph before you start typing. It’s in the Visual editor Row 2 first position “style”. See the illustration here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2 If you forget to do that then edit the post, highlight all in the Visual editor, select Paragraph from the Format tool, switch editor to Text then switch back to Visual and click Update.

I do not know how to deal with that but another Volunteer may be able to help. To be sure this thread does not fall through the cracks I tagged it for Staff assistance. Thanks for your advice timethief. I’m reading the links you gave, and also I adjusted my settings as you recommended. Still trying to figure out how to add non-English characters.
Do you now of any website services like WordPress that will let me just upload an already-formatted Word or pdf document? It’s going to get really old having to reformat everything I write. Thanks -
Hi there,
If you want to embed a Microsoft Word or PDF file, you can use a third party application called Scribd:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/scribd/
This will embed the entire document on your page/post.
Let me know if you have any questions with this!
