How to improve LCP on Edin Theme?
-
Our LCP is 2x+ higher than what the new google threshold of 2.5 is on all of our webpages. Since we have the business plan, support has said to upload high quality since optimalization is handled with Videopress and JetPack. We only have a few plugins so I don’t know what more to do to get us to meet this new mobile threshold. When looking at PageSpeed Insights it mentions the video thumbnails are large, the video is large, reduce Java and CSS, all of which WP support is saying is all “good”. Almost seems as though Google arbitrarily pulled the 2.5 number out of the air without considering what businesses need and video impact.
Please help me in seeing what more can be done with our site to get our pages under the LCP 2.5 Threshold. This is very important to us since we are a small local business needing to do all we can to capture the market that is mostly large multilocation companies. Appearing in the 3 pack of Local search is majorly important for our business.
Thanks!

Improving your website’s Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) metric is important for both user experience and search engine optimization. Here are some suggestions to help you improve your LCP:
- Optimize Images and Videos: As PageSpeed Insights suggested, large video thumbnails and videos can significantly impact your website’s load time. Consider compressing your images and videos to reduce their file sizes without sacrificing quality.
- Minimize JavaScript and CSS: Reducing the amount of JavaScript and CSS on your website can help speed up the rendering process. Consider removing any unnecessary code and optimizing your remaining code.
- Use a Content Delivery Network (CDN): A CDN can help improve your website’s loading speed by delivering content from the server closest to the user’s location.
- Leverage Browser Caching: Browser caching can help speed up your website by storing frequently used files on the user’s browser. Consider implementing browser caching for your website.
- Prioritize Above-The-Fold Content: Prioritizing above-the-fold content can help ensure that users see the most important parts of your website first. Consider optimizing your website’s layout to ensure that the most important content loads first.
- Use Lazy Loading: Lazy loading can help improve your website’s loading speed by delaying the loading of images and videos until they are needed. Consider implementing lazy loading for your website.
- Upgrade Your Hosting Plan: If you are using a shared hosting plan, consider upgrading to a dedicated hosting plan or a managed WordPress hosting plan. This can help improve your website’s loading speed by providing more resources for your website.
Overall, improving your website’s LCP is a continuous process that requires ongoing optimization and testing. By implementing these suggestions, you can help improve your website’s loading speed and meet the new Google mobile threshold.

Maximus, This is no help as we have done all we can with the Edin theme from our end. We already have a CDN with caching, photos and video we upload are on the business plan are therefore are NOT to be optimized since the plan has a built in photo and video optimizer. When I did try optimizing before uploading it flipped all kinds of errors in Google Search Console regarding their size, that is how I found out after speaking with WP that Business plans are NOT to do this.
Lazy Loading only doubles the page speed and LCP, so per WP suggestion I keep it off now. However, the Hero image is hard coded to be lazy load, nothing I can change in regards to that or per WP, “it will break the theme.”
Per WP support I was also told that “reducing the hard coded CSS and Javascript will break the theme” and that “Google does not take into account it is a WP managed theme in their algorithm. “
The Hero image is the only “big” item above the fold. All other videos and photos are below the fold. Also, hosting plan is via WordPress, touted the fastest.
My biggest issue is still photos and videos. Seems like I may need to switch themes to maybe Astra or Generatedpress, which supposedly are “light”. Seems the Edin theme has crap coded in there are I don’t even use, which is not helping matters.:(
Was hoping someone had solutions specific to the Edin theme and just not flipping back what is in the support pages.
Thanks for trying Maximus!

Hey there,
Almost seems as though Google arbitrarily pulled the 2.5 number out of the air without considering what businesses need and video impact.
That’s an astute observation. It would take some work to do comparisons, but I would imagine if you have to have a video, you’re going to get a higher number on that regardless of what theme you use.
That said, Edin is quite old. It was responsive on mobile, but I’m not sure how much effort was put into speed. And, with the way it’s put together, you have to pull a bunch of different pages together to display a page.
If you wanted to, you could export a copy of the content and upload it to a test site with a more modern theme. You can get fairly similar layouts, too. Merkai comes to mind; its demo shows a blog, but you could customize it for your site instead, and even trim down the template a bit if you don’t need all of that on the front page. Or you could go another direction with a layout like Dorna – that’s already designed for a business site, and it loads very quickly.
If you’re considering changing themes anyway, I’d recommend testing those to see what you think.
I hope it helps!
