Hi there,
You can simply go to https://wordpress.com/start and create a new blog with a new URL :)
Or you could create separate categories here: https://wordpress.com/settings/taxonomies/category/daltonfriendsite.wordpress.com
Then go to https://wordpress.com/customize/daltonfriendsite.wordpress.com, click “Menus”, choose menu of your choice and add a new menu item in your menu bar that links directly to the different post categories. That way you will have menu items displaying relevant posts.

Thank you so much managed to get it working :) is there any way where it doesn’t post on your main blog and only on the second one?

Hi there,
Here are set up instructions for the theme you are using https://wordpress.com/theme/illustratr
By default the front page of your site is where all posts appear unless you create a static front page and a separate empty page where the software will display all posts.
This is a one or the other situation. You can create a static front page, and then a separate page for all your published posts. You can do that and the first step is to create two pages and then designate them appropriately.
(1) All posts on the front page which is also called the home page and is the URL of the site by default.
(2) Or a static front page http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/ and all posts on a different page. In that case you can create a Page for the Home page https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/#create-a-new-page first, then create one for your Posts/Blog. Lastly, you designate a static front page.
Optional – Create a blog page https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/#optional-create-a-blog-page

No. There must always be a single page that displays all posts and by default it is the front page of the site.

Like Timethief said, your only option here would be to go to customizer https://wordpress.com/customize/daltonfriendsite.wordpress.com
Then click on “Static front page” and choose a “a static page” instead of “Your posts”.Then you could design your front page that would encourage visitors to visit either “Research” or your other category page (which you will have to create too).
daltonfriendsite.wordpress.com/blog would still have all the posts mixed together, but you don’t have to showcase it anywhere on your page, so problem solved :)
