How to insert image to post without being added to gallery?

I am trying to add an image by Inserting it to Post but this is after I have already added a gallery. I found a website (http://codex.wordpress.org/User:Esmi/How_To_Avoid_Adding_Images_to_a_WordPress_Gallery) that seems to be the answer to my problem and I followed it step by step. Unfortunately, the image continues to be added to my gallery as well as being inserted into the post. I do not want it in the gallery at all. PLEASE HELP!

Use excludes, which is explained here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/#gallery-shortcode
Best to consult with the Support site here for WordPress.com. The codex refers to the standalone WordPress program and often doesn’t correlate to our reality on WordPress.com. :)
