How to insert media in sort order?

It’s possible to inserting several photos from media library in one operation, but the order in which they go into the post is maybe random or maybe not, but is *not* in the obvious order, namely sort order on the names of the files. Is there a way to specify the order of insertion?
(File name order is obvious for documenting events, but other orders could also be imagined…)

It’s called a “Gallery” and it has several options, including drag and drop into the order you want your images to appear and also Random.

Hmmm… that does give me reordering, but what gets inserted into the post is a gallery, not N distinct photos. Not quite what I’m hoping for. Any further thoughts, or am I out of luck?
