How to insert Pay Pal links into posts

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to insert a Pay Pay link into a post. Step 4 of the instructions says this: ‘To place your PayPal button on a post or page, you can paste that code into the ‘HTML’ tab when creating or editing the post or page.’ There is no ‘HTML’ tab anywhere on my edit page!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Well, I’d like to help you. Which address (url) are you? If you can send a screen print that you are going to help a lot.

The more information you give me, the more I can help you.

    hugs

In the post/page editor, look directly above the text box and toolbar icons. There should be an option to switch between Visual and Text/HTML. You should be on visual. Switch to the other one.
    See here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/

Whether you’re using the old editor or the new, you should see those options.

I found the right tab; it was named “TEXT” not “HTML” so it fooled me. Anyway, yes when you use TEXT all the html code shows up. Unfortunately, when I try and paste the code from PayPal for a payment button, it does not work. Apparently, WP has an entire convoluted procedure for starting with the code and then manipulating into something acceptable that can be pasted. Why they do this I don’t know. Do you?

Anyway, thankyou both for your help. When I try their procedure I’l let you know if that doesn’t work either…

  • What button code are you using? You can only use the basic button. If you’ve set up your button with any of the customizations, like specifying the amount or adding a drop-down menu to the button it won’t work. You must also use the email link generated by PayPal, not the website link.

Note you first have to follow the instructions to generate the link for your button here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/get-paypal-button-code/

Then you need to insert that link in the code provided in step 3 here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/view-all/#step-3

The reason it’s done this way is because the regular type of code for the button can potentially be used to introduce malware to WordPress.com, so there’s a blanket-ban on that type of code here.

Yes, I tried a customized button. Now I know the entire procedure using only the basic button, which will be limiting, but that’s my only choice.

I understand the need for secure measures against malware, but I’m wondering why P/P doesn’t mention the danger, and encourages pasting their code on anyone’s website. I’m thinking if its a risk to WP pages, then its a risk to anyone else’s, unless there something unique about WP’s design.

    thanks again.

  • It’s not the PP code itself, but the HTML it uses. Any iframe or form html tag can be used to insert malware to a site. Inserting it on your own site doesn’t pose a security risk to you, but someone could use a PayPal button to sneak malicious code into WordPress.com, and as we’re in a shared hosting environment here that can bring the whole platform down. That’s why we’re not allowed to use any iframe or form code on our sites, among others. More on that here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/code/
