How to install a "private" extension on a free wordpress site

    Hello,

I am just starting to create our family website and I want it to be private. However, using the “private” option is not possible because 1/ I saw that I am only allowd 10 users and 2/ each user will need to create a wordpress.com account, which is far too complicated for grand parents.
I saw that the best way to do it is to use the “private” plug in. However, as I am on the free version of wordpress.com, and I am not a developer, I can’t see how to upload this plugin.
Could someone help me with this issue ?

    Many thanks in advance

    Véronique

  • Hi there. To start with, you can add more than 10 users. The system just restricts you to ten invitations at a time to prevent abuse by spammers.

I’m afraid it’s not possible to install any plugins on WordPress.com. The privacy options under General Settings is the only way, and unfortunately that will require each viewer you add to have a WordPress.com account for security reasons: http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

Another option that might work for you is to set the blog to public (maybe with the Discourage Search Engines option enabled) and then to password-protect your posts and pages. It is less secure as any person with the password will be able to view your posts/pages, but they won’t need a WordPress.com account to do so, only the password. You’ll need to password-protect every individual post and page when you publish it. https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/#password-protect-a-post

It’s really not difficult to get a WordPress.com identity, even if you’re a grandparent. I know a three year old who managed it. I know a 93 year old who managed it. It’s not hard at all.

    Hello,
    Many thanks for your help.
In fact, and while trying to find a better way, I did exactely what kokkieh described. So I guess I will stick to this approach for now.
But it is good knowing that the number of users is not limited to 10 might and I might change my mind on the approach.
    Cheers,
