I purchased a WordPress theme on Theme Forest however I can’t work out how to install it. I read somewhere that third party themes can not be installed into WordPress however I have heard people say they have purchased themes from there and installed them on WordPress.

The only themes that can be used on a WordPress.COM site are found here: http://theme.wordpress.com
You should check out this explanation of the difference between WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG. Two totally separate blogging platforms.
It may be possible to get a refund for the theme you purchased, if you are still interested in using WordPress.COM.

Thank you ifmomsaysok. I actually worked this out about 1hr before your post after lots of reading. Feel relieved that I have the answer and can move forward. I hope this helps other people as I’ve found so many people asking the same question.

The only themes we can use on free hosted WordPress.com blogs like your blog are the themes found here http://wordpress.com/themes/
There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs and we cannot:
- upload any third party themes,
- create child themes,
- create our own themes,
- edit templates,
- or use stylesheets from other themes.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/There is no upgrade you can purchase that changes that. WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can create themes, upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, and edit the database, etc. Learn about the differences here. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
