How to keep pingbacks from appearing in comments?

Pingbacks to my posts appear in comments and in the last comments’ widget. Can I do something to keep them from doing it?
I found a thread regarding this problem: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/pingbacks-from-linking-to-own-post-how-to-stop?replies=3#post-176691 but did not really understand the solution. I would appreciate if anybody could make it clearer to me.Thanks in advance,

You can keep pingbacks to your own earlier posts you link to in recent posts from appearing http://en.support.wordpress.com/pingbacks/#can-i-stop-self-pings
You can choose not to approve any pinhbacks your blog receives as well. Why one would do the latter is beyond me but some people do. -

I also forgot to say that on every post under the editor box you will see a Discussion field with these two options:
Discussion
___ Allow Comments.
___ Allow trackbacks and pingbacks on this page.
