How to know the posts that are visited due to encrypted Google search results?

  • Unknown's avatar

I understand that most Google search results are encrypted and do not reveal the search text. I noticed another trend wherein most of the visits from the search show up as a count for my Home Page and not to the specific posts that may have shown up in the result. Can this be fixed? Do I need to any changes in the way I use Tags? Or is it something that as per current design we have to live with? I am just curious because the visits get clubbed ‘Home Page’ and I do not get to know which of my posts are more popular than the rest. Looking forward to a reply. Thanks. Vijay

  • I visited your blog now and you don’t make it easy for people to actually get to your posts. You home page is static, which is fine, but your blog posts page is also static and doesn’t actually contain any posts. So, the reason why you get so many home page views and no post views could simply be because people can’t find your posts (that’s my guess, at least).

Instructions on how to have both a static front page and a page displaying all your posts can be found here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

    Hi kokkieh,

Thanks for your response though I am not sure that is the answer.

I do get a few searches pointing to individual post visits as well.
I just did a small test – I logged out of my blog and did a Google search using one of my Tags. The google results included my post as well and I clicked the link and visited the post. I then checked my blog and found it reflecting correctly in my view section.

Am kind of curious on what Tag item you used to check on my blog. Today apart from Home page visits, I had a view of one of my post – Review of ‘Mind your language’.

Home Page visits are about 75 % of my site visits. May be that is the way it is and there is no real mystery to begin with.

    Cheers
    Vijay

  • I just visited the two pages and did not read any posts, so I wouldn’t have influenced post stats.

Keep in mind that unless someone specifically arrives on your blog via a link to a specific post, chances are they’re going to land on the home page. Also, if your reading settings are that you show a full post in feeds as opposed to excerpts, people could well be reading your posts without actually having to click through to the post specifically. The WordPress Reader counts those as post views, but other readers using the RSS feed might not.

Yes – thanks once again. It could explain why most of the visits tend to be on my Home Page.
I understand that the settings suggested by you will help people visit the posts once they reach my Home Page. That should be reader friendly for sure.

  • I see your home page now contains your blog feed. The link I posted above shows how to have your home page static and the blog feed on a different page as well, if that’s what you prefer. But yes, having the blog feed available somewhere definitely makes it more reader-friendly.

Keep in mind you can also insert a more-tag into posts themselves. That way, on your own blog (as opposed to RSS feeds) only a portion of your post will display on the home/posts page. That way people won’t be able to read entire posts without clicking to the post itself. You insert this tag directly into a post while writing it in the editor. Instructions here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

Hey thanks again – but I am more of a writer than a tech savvy guy. Happy enough to let people read my posts the way I like it.
Not sure how many links you clicked but it mostly increased the count of my Home Page / Blog Page count.
Also I need to keep a static home page to retain the Quintus theme.
Things are fine as it is – I may get around to tweaking display and other settings if I become more savvy in handling it.

    Hi,

I got a hang of what you mentioned in your last update and it is useful.
It was great interacting with you – thanks once again for all your help.

    Regards
    Vijay

May I please intervene with some information I hope will be useful to you? What attracts search engines is unique content in posts, not pages that cannot be found anywhere else on the internet. Search engines are not attracted to static pages. They are for content that rarely changes. Static front pages are traffic killers because no returning visitor wants to click through the same old blah, blah, blah page to find what they came to read ie. your most recent post. I think you will benefit by reading this post of mine http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/05/12/better-blogging-at-wordpress-com-pages-and-posts/

    Hi timethief,

I have learnt more about traffic flows today than in the 6 months I have been on wordpress blog. It is a science in itself. Thanks for stopping by and providing your ideas.
Have made some changes based on the feedback so far – I also want to remember that the main reason I blog is just to enjoy my old passion for playing with words. Guess I will want to continue my focus on that more than anything else.

    Cheers
    Vijay

    You’re welcome Vijay.

  • @Vijay – I’m glad if I could help. I agree with the bit about writing being about your passion for words, but it can’t hurt to make it easier for others to find your words. You’d do well to heed timethief’s advice. She’s been doing this longer than most of us and knows what she’s talking about.

    Happy blogging.
