How to link old blog address to new one?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yesterday I changed my blog address to this: http://thequietvoice18.wordpress.com/

My previous address was http://thomasle18.wordpress.com/, which has my full name in it, so I had to change it. However, now whenever someone clicks a link to my blog on Google or through a link posted somewhere it goes to a page that says my old blog address is not available. Is there a way to redirect them to my new blog, or do I have to start over from scratch? Thank you!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The old blog has been deleted and that means all the links in it will produce a “404” page not found for several months until Google’s clears their cache. That cannot be remedied. Therefore you will have to start over from scratch. If your had kept the old blog and simply purchased a domain and domain mapping for it then all the links would have automatically and seamlessly redirected your visitors clicking any links to the old blog to the same post in the new domain domain but you cannot do that now.

Ah – so there’s no way I can purchase a domain or do anything about it now? Just making sure. Also, is there anyway I can expedite the process of removing my old blog page from google’s cache so my new one can take its place? Sorry for the trouble…

If you had not deleted the original blog you could have purchased a domain and domain mapping to prevent the breaking of the links. It’s too late for that now. :( When we have singular pages that “404” it can be effective to use the URL removal tool. We request and Google Staff sometimes accommodate. The call is theirs to make. However, I do caution you as attempting to expedite Google’s cache clearing is usually not effective when you are referring to the contents of a whole blog. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2008/03/21/how-to-remove-data-from-googles-cache/

You are stuck with the search engines because to request that old pages be removed you need to verify ownership of the site and you can’t do that with a deleted site.

Unless you were using Domain Mapping with your own registered name you are also stuck as you can’t purchase a domain that is part of WordPress.COM (your-old-site.wordpress.com, can’t be refegistered)

Ah okay, thank you guys. So, I should just sit and wait it out and eventually Google will remove the broken links/old address from their search engine? Thanks again.

Yes that’s all you can do at this point. However, the more active you are when it comes to creating new content the more attention your blog will receive from search spiders and that content will appear in the indexed pages of the SERPs (search engine page results). If your blogging friends backlink to your new posts that will also be helpful. See here for factors that expedite indexing and then start creating new content like crazy. > http://www.onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/01/21/omg-i-cant-find-my-blog-on-google/
