how to log into admin site for wordpress

  I have a website on wordpress and I need to log into the admin site to update it. I was told that I could do that by typing in the URL followed by /ADMIN or by /WP-ADMIN, but those all return a 404 error. What am I doing wrong? I have login credentials for the WP Admin site, but do not have a log in for the original web developer that created the site for me.
