How to make a blog private..?

  I would like to make a blog that only people I invite can access (e.g. with a password). I do not want it to be public (i.e. for people to be able to search and find it online). Can I do that with WordPress? If so, does it require upgrading?

  You can do that with WP.com. On the Settings->Reading page of the dashboard, set it to Private and then Invite the readers by email address on your Users page.
