How to make blog private

Hi everyone, I have recently learned that there is no longer a “plugin” button on my dashboard so I am unable to install a privacy plugin downloaded from the web. Is there a way that I can still make my entire blog private (not post-by-post) and password protected for readers? It’s a family blog and I want the images/text protected. TIA!
