I am trying to make the content in my posts fill more of the white space either sides. Any suggestions please?

You cannot chnage the column width in any theme without purchasing any annually renewable custom design upgrade and doing the required CSS editing. See here for details on purchasing the annually renewable custom and CSS editing:

Hi @zord88, I see you have the WordPress.com Premium upgrade which includes Custom Design.
The white space to the left and right of the content on your posts and pages is a left and right margin setting. You can add the following CSS at the bottom of your existing CSS and then adjust the left and right margins as desired.
.singular #content, .left-sidebar.singular #content { margin-left: 7.6%; margin-right: 7.6%; } -
Sorry, let’s not use the above. Add the following instead and adjust the “width” as desired. You may have to make a draft post or page with more content and preview that to see the actual change since most of your pages have just single line paragraphs and such.
