how to make custom links?

I have a page on my wordpress (which is installed on my server via MySQL) and I want it so when someone types in http://www.mysite.com/about it will go to the about page on my wordpress.
right now it goes to like http://mysite.com/?p=123
I want it so if they type in mysite.com/about it will go to the same page. Thanks!
