How to make each pages only display links from a certain category
-
Hi
I’m setting up a site that has a separate pages for various countries and I would like only certain link categories to display on each page. To be specific, the England page will only display the links from the England link category and the Spain page only display links from the Spain link category. Can anyone tell me if this is possible?
Many thanks

I’m new to wordpress so apologies if I’m labouring this but….
doesn’t the category widget work with “posts” rather than “links”. Even then I’m not clear how you could configure it so different pages, sharing the same template, showed different categories.

The Categories widget only shows posts made using a particular category. To make links categories, you create links in different categories in Manage > Links. When you add the Links widget in Design > Widgets the links will display in category order, alphabetical by category and alphabetical for each category.

Right – but what I wanted was to configure each page to show only links from a given link category and no other i.e. The england page only shows links from an england link category that I create and the spain page only shows links from a spain link category. From what you’re saying I take it this can’t be done?

There’s no way to do this automatically the way you seem to want it. By default, links in the links widget are displayed in the sidebar, they cannot be turned into pages. The only way to do this is to “manually” write a page containing the links and title the page according to the category.

Sorry – I’ve just realized I’ve not done a very good job of explaining myself :(
When I said I only want certain link categories to display on each page I didn’t mean thats the one and only thing i want on the WHOLE page. What i meant was, in the sidebar, where ALL the links are usually displayed, I want to be able to select certain link categories to be displayed.
So…
I have a page for each country (england, spain, france…). These are standard pages in every respect (I’m using the mistylook theme), with a main area for content and a sidebar for links or whatever other widgets I decide to add. Now I also have a links category for each country (again, england, spain etc). What I want to be able to do is to configure the England page so it only displays the links from the England links category, the spain page to only display links from the spain links category and so on.
Hope thats clear – thanks for your patience!

No, you had done a very good job of explaining yourself from the beginning, and everything is just as wpvstp says. You insist because you’ve got a misunderstanding. Your pages don’t have “a main area for content and a sidebar for links” etc: your pages (and your posts) appear in the main area of the blog, beside which is THE sidebar. There’s only one sidebar, always in the same place regardless of what the main area shows, so you cannot have the sidebar display different things with different pages.
If you really want different links for each page, then, as wpvstp said, you must remove the links widget and add the particular links in the page itself, say below the rest of the content of the page, perhaps separated by a line or other decorative element. (You can even create two columns inside the page, one for the main content and one for the links, but that’s a bit complicated for beginners.)
