How to make images/links open in new tabs/windows?

When people click on thumbnails and external URLs in my blog, I don’t want them to be diverted away and then have to hit the “back” button numerous times to get back to the blog. The purpose of a link is not to send them away but to give them something else to read in conjunction with the blog post or in addition to it. The purpose of a link is never to give readers something to look at INSTEAD of the blog.

To that end, it’s preferable for clicks to open the links/images in new tabs or windows. When designing websites it’s simply a case of inserting a target=”_blank” to the links.

I know I can do also this within my blog posts in order to make links appear in new tabs or windows, but must admit I’m becoming sick and tired of manually typing this in every time.

Isn’t there some way of setting this as a default, or at the very least having a button one can click to achieve this when adding images and URL links to posts?

When you click on the ‘insert/edit link’ (it’s the one with the three links, I’m sure you know) button in the visual editor, you’ll find a dropdown menu for ‘target’. There, you can specify if the link should open in a new window or in a new tab. If left in the –not set– condition, the link will open in the same tab.

    Happy blogging.

For images, the option is only available after you insert the image: click image, click mountain icon, click Advanced Settings.

(So, to me, having the code model in a simple text file and copy-pasting it to the html editor is definitely faster.)

Thanks both of you for the replies.

I have never used the visual editor before, only the HTML editor – that explains my ignorance.

Very helpful advice. Looks like the text linking might be convenient, but as you say panaghiotisadam, for images it seems more hassle than it’s worth.
