How to make my front page look like Twenty Twelve live demo
-
What widget is being used for the “Meet the Team” item on the bottom left of the Front Page of the Twenty Twelve live demo?
And how do I make that widget actually show up on my Front Page?
About.me isn’t right I don’t think, because I don’t want my WP about me info in that box.
I have tried to do this with the “Text” widget (which is wrong for this because it doesn’t allow a photo). But I can’t even get that widget or the content for it to show up on my front page.
Is that because my blog is still “Private”? Shouldn’t I be able to see the results of the widgets I am adding even when my blog is private?
Thanks! :-)

For that, see the “Front Page Template” section at http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentytwelve/

Been there, done that, natch. Doesn’t help. Directs me to the generic WP widget page. Widget page is vast and I don’t see one that will achieve the effect shown in Twenty Twelve demo for “Meet the Team”. Nor does it help me know why the “Text” widget that I DID add to my front page isn’t visible.
Thanks. -
It’s the instructions there which are important. You haven’t selected the Front Page Template for your desired front page yet. ;)

Actually I did do that when i set it up, and I just went and double-checked. Under Settings -> Reading in my Dashboard, I have ticked “Front page displays a static front page.” So I would like to know why the “Text” widget I added to the “First Front Page Widget Area” is not displaying…

Right, but you need to edit that page and choose “Front Page Template” as the page’s template. Right now it’s using “Default Template”.
See step 2 under “Front Page Template” at http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentytwelve/

Thank you macmanx! That solved that problem. My Front Page widgets are now showing because I have now selected “Front Page Template”. :-)
Can you help with the other part of my question – what widget am I looking for to add my headshot and bio in lower left, like the “Meet the Team” item in the Twenty Twelve live demo?
Thanks a bunch!

That’s a Text widget, with the image included via HTML, like:
<img src="[image URL]"/>If you upload the image via Media -> Add New, you can get the image URL by editing it after upload.

Doesn’t seem to be working. Does my html look right?
<img src=”http://electroplague.wordpress.com/?attachment_id=31″ />Is there supposed to be a space after the final quote mark?
Thanks again. :-)

The Text widget won’t let me save my image source html without that space after the final quote mark. If I remove the space, it adds it as soon as I press save. I think that’s the problem. How to make it stop?

That’s the attachment page, you want the image URL, which you can get from editing the item in the Media section of your blog’s Dashboard.
Specifically, it’s http://electroplague.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/dscn8572-cropsmaller5123x150.jpg

Since you are such an excellent problem-solver macmanx, perhaps you can tell me how to enable word wrap at the end of a line of text in my newest blog: http://electroplague.wordpress.com (which is still private). The default format is breaking long words in two (with a hyphen) at a line end, to put the 2nd half of the word on the next line. I don’t like that.
In my two earlier blogs (theme: Twenty Ten), word wrap at line ends was automatically enabled. But in this newest blog of mine (using Twenty Twelve) it doesn’t seem to be.
Thanks! :)

Ignore my last question. Got an answer to it. Auto-hyphenation is built in to 2012 theme. I can’t easily turn it off, it seems, without buying an upgrade. So I will probably change themes… I know 2010 doesn’t auto-hyphenate.
-
Yes, you would need to add a Custom Design upgrade or one of the bundles to modify CSS to un-hyphenate the theme.
Though, switching themes is a much simpler and freer option. :)
