How to make only the ingress visible for the readers at first sight?

I’d like to get the readers of my blog to get a few sentences of each post showing, and if they are then interested, they can click on the post they find interesting and take a better look. Is that possible and if so, how do I do it?
Another question is if it’s possible to get archives etc on the side and not at the bottom (footer) of the page. Is it only depending on the layout I choose or can something be done? Really like the background I have no, but I’m considering to change because of this.
