How to make single gallery icon

I would rather have a single icon or thumb to click to open a gallery rather than thumbs of all the images. I have seen it done, but cant figure out how to do it. Help?

You could use the next page tag

http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/nextpage/Insert a (large) picture then add the next page tag. Put the gallery shortcode after the next page tag.
Finally go back and change what the large picture links to. The link will be like this:

The Gallery works this way. An image gallery will display a set of thumbnail images attached to a particular post or page. When clicked, gallery images are displayed in a full-size carousel view. If your theme supports it, you can use the gallery post format which will show only a single post on the main page and then when that post is clicked, the gallery will show on the single-post page. I looked though the “not official faq” and didnt find anything. I am using the “adventure journal” theme which does not appear on the post format supported themes.
So..rather than jump into the code as suggested by 1tess, I am going to try some of the supported themes.

Welp… I tried a number of other themes that allowed post format support and couldn’t find any that really worked with my scheme. So I tried the suggestion by 1tess. Not much of a html guy. I just added <!–nextpage–>[gallery] to the end of the page code and linked the pic as directed.AND IT WORKED!
except.
I can click on the big embedded picture and it goes to a gallery page (2) full of thumbs. If I click the back arrow I go back to page 1. So far so good. But if I click on the big picture, it takes me to page 2 gallery, then I click on any image thumb, it opens the gallery and I can step through pics. Good indeed. Then when I click on escape it takes me back to the thumbs. OKfine.
BUT…to get back to page 1 where I started, I have to push the back arrow 3 times. Or click on the page one link at the bottom of the page. Not so good. I think most viewers would be frustrated.
Any way to fix this? Did I do the html rong?

BTW, in my perfect world, clicking on the big picture would go immediately to the gallery view of the first image. And escaping would take you back to the big picture. It seems cumbersome to go though the thumbnail step.

Yes, well with wp.com I cannot think of an alternative.
Opinion:
The gallery and carousel features here are clumsy.

o well. it is free after all. I will repost if I find any way to make it work the way I want it to. Till then, I guess I will have all those thumbs to look at.
